History of MLA

India’s freedom struggle and women’s movement in the 1920s were the catalysts for the birth of Malleswaram Ladies Association, which originated with a group of enterprising and enlightened women, who met to exchange views and organize events for social interactions.  Subsequently, over the years, the association evolved as a means to effect social change through women’s empowerment. The year 1927 celebrated two significant events: the 25th anniversary of the enlightened rule of Sri Krishna Raja Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore and the birth of this institution.
The association grew and evolved with emphasis on developing practical skills such as tailoring, basket weaving etc. to harness women’s creativity and talent with a view to increasing women’s self reliance, self confidence as well as providing a means for financial self sustainability.
From such humble beginnings, MLA has grown to a multilayered institution that spans the gamut from kindergarten to postgraduate education, driven by a mission to empower economically underprivileged girls and women. The spirit of the founding mothers’ of this institution is kept alive by successive members of the association to this day.

The management members, consisting of a team of dedicated ladies serve on an honorary basis for the empowerment of women through quality education. The Malleswaram Ladies’ Association has an inclusive, supportive and humane culture that strives to create an atmosphere that is empathetic and welcoming to women from a wide variety of backgrounds, and supports the organization’s mission of an ethical society.
